Recently, the entire nation was shocked when the US President Donald Trump pardoned Maricopa County, Sheriff Joe Arpaio. There are many allegations against Joe Arpaio, who is known across the country to be amongst the toughest sheriffs the country ever had.
However, one of the most shocking crimes that Joe Arpaio committed was the unlawful arrest of Jim and Michael, owner of the Village Voice Media.
The Village Voice Media owns over a dozen newspapers that are circulated in the critical states across the country, and are highly popular. The reason behind the staggering growth of the readership of the publications of Village Voice Media is because they represent the alternative to the mainstream media, which is known very well to be manipulative when it comes to revealing the complete truth to the people.
Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were arrested in a very disrespectful and shocking manner at the middle of the night by the emergency enforcement task force of Arizona on the orders of Maricopa County Sheriff. Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were kept for 24 days in prison, and it came as a surprise to the entire nation including even the news media fraternity.
Even Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were completely surprised by the arrest as it came as a total surprise and they haven’t committed any crime other than for reporting honestly. However, it was the news on the Grand Jury investigation that was published in the Phoenix New Times that triggered the rage of the Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
It is what led to the arrest of Larkin and Lacey, and it was entirely against the constitutional rights of Larkin and Lacey. Freedom of Press is a national constitutional right, and coming in its way is controversial for which Joe Arpaio has been infamous for a long time. As soon as Larkin and Lacey were released, they fought for their rights legally, and a long and cumbersome legal battle began. In the end, justice prevailed, and all the unreasonable charges that were leveled against them were dropped, and Joe Arpaio was convicted for misusing his authority to unlawfully arresting them.
Larkin and Lacey were also given the compensation of $3.7 million for the legal expenses they incurred and the mental harassment they had to go through. It was considered the victory of the media and the freedom of press and expression that is the constitutional right of every citizen of the country.
However, in a recent development, the US President Donald Trump granted the pardon to Joe Arpaio. It came as a surprise to Larkin and Lacey as well as the entire nation who wanted to see Joe Arpaio being convicted and jailed for the heinous crimes he has committed for so long.
However, even though Larkin and Lacey were disappointed, they continue their struggle and mission to bring truth to the people and have also used their compensation amount to create the Frontera Fund. It is used to help and support the minorities and immigrants in Arizona.
